Chaîne Summer Picnic
Fairburn Farm, Cowichan Valley
Sunday July 30th, 2006

Mara has created a Culinary Retreat and Guesthouse at Fairburn Farm, enabling guests to experience the very best of the food and wine the Cowichan Valley has to offer. Mara is recognized as one of the leading culinary artists on the island and she founded the Vancouver Island Feast of Fields in 1998. She has invited the members of the Chaîne to join her again for a celebration of summer at Fairburn Farm in the Cowichan Valley.

Fairburn Farm was the site of the famous "Buffalo Wars" between Darrel and Anthea Archer and the Govt. of Canada and after some devastating losses they now have a thriving herd of 40 healthy magnificent animals. The Archers are now devoting their energies to the operation of Canada’s only Water Buffalo Dairy.
Mara Jernigan, chef and slow food enthusiast, has brought her passion and expertise to Fairburn Farm, where she treats her guests to the finest food and wine in the Cowichan Valley. We are fortunate indeed to have Mara prepare the 2006 Chaîne picnic.

Mara does not provide a menu until the day of the event as she wishes to take full advantage of the freshest local ingredients. Service is reminiscent of the Sunday family meal in Italy and will include fish, meat and pasta in addition to locally cultivated vegetables roasted in Mara's new brick oven. . Our picnic will be sited to offer sweeping views of the pasture and grazing water buffalo, the gardens and the mountains.
